Generally speaking a Team's position in the football hierarchy is dependent on the finances available to that club. The richer the Club, the higher you move up the leagues; less money down the pyramid you go. Over the next few years, assuming we hold onto Jim, we could possible make the second division. The progress to that position could be accelerated if a true County fan, with a few bob in his pocket, would buy the ground from the council and donate to the Club without any strings. To progress further than league 2 we would need a backer. This when the problems arise. The investor comes along and, probable to avoid Tax, and puts his money in the Club and up the leagues we go. Great! However, one of two scenarios occur: 1. The investor gets bored with his adventure as a Football Club owner and pulls out, but not before selling the players to get his money back (i.e. Vic Bernard and our friend from Sheffield). or 2. They die and their widow wants her husbands investment back and the Club have to sell the players (Barlow). Either way we end up back at square one. As most of you are aware, I've been watching County for many many years and have accepted that our finances will always be at a level where we watch basement football.

Good post that, Halfa.
I don't want a money bags backer, I'd rather we got someone like Sean Connolly in to show us how to be self-sufficient.
The ground issue would be better in the hands of the Co-op, with ALL members having a say in its future. So if it was to be bought by a rich fan and donated back to the club, in the hands of the Co-op is where I'd want it.
Regarding getting higher than L2 - I honestly don't care. All those years we spent in the league basement battling to tread water - even when we were applying for re-election - are still way better than this, so I'd happily settle for getting back to L2 and holding our own for another 20 odd years!

good posts, both.
all i want is a bit of hope. with the backdrop of our two best players having left the club after we'd finished eighth in a 21 team division six featuring plucky minnows and a few moneybags nothing clubs (look: ferriby are back!), that hope has taken a knock.
but i have to remember administration, that kn*b jim melrose in the manager's coat, faintin' mary, the scouse mafia, the social loafers, the march, 'snape out', ryan f***ing mcknight, bogie marking his own card after six games, kennedy about to sell edgeley park...
...and relatively, relatively, we've got a bit of hope now. an experienced, seemingly settled club legend as manager, a board from which a lot of the deadweights seem to have been weeded out, the council stepping in to lift the pressure around edgeley park, the co-op and the player's fund. football's so ephemeral - hero ranieri one minute, sacked the next; players kissing the badge while handing in a transfer request - that we expect to be completely righted after having been so grievously wounded. we've been listing for years, and gradually -to extend this metaphor beyond breaking point- have bailed out enough that we're not in imminent danger of sinking.
yeah. so we're not winning at maine road, narrowly losing a major semi-final against a team featuring a couple of international stars, winning nine in a row without conceding. we're not standing on that terrace at saltergate on that monday night. but we could be*. it's still on offer, because -so far- we've survived it all. we're like the cockroaches of the football world. right now it's a bit hard to see where it's coming from, but we could still have our day.
*yeah ok, not saltergate any more...but you know what i mean.

But I bet some fans still want them in! I used to work with the chair of the supporters association that saved the clubwhen they almost disappeared a few years back. He was disgusted last year when they, the club, decided to just disband the community group that saved them and removed them from any control within the club.
