ABC-Tears Are Not Enough
Bramhall’s finest, Martin Fry, leading a band that produced one of the greatest albums of the 80s, Lexicon of Love. The above is one of many examples of clever word play, plus it has my favourite lines,
“Excuses have their uses
But now they’re all used up
All used up”
which I quote to my students when they come without homework.
The Beatles-Yesterday
Of course one could pick so many of the Fab Four’s songs, but the powerful simplicity of the song, plus the use of a string quartet, does it for me.
The Cure –Close To You
Quirky 80s group and lead singer, Robert Smith. The trumpet rounds up a fun song.
DeeLite-Groove Is In The Heart
Comparing anything from The Doors (a very close second!) to this is impossible, but if you don’t feel like dancing to this, there’s summat wrong with you!
Erasure-A Little Respect
Andy Bell is a great pop singer and this is a short but great pop song about love.
Falco-Rock Me Amadeus
If only for a song in German making no 1! His early death was a great loss to music. (Falco and Mozart)
Herbert Grönemeyer-Für dich da (Here for you)
Had the lyrics of this song read out in German and English at our wedding. The lines
I’m here for you
What else can I do?
With the ambiguous final line says what a relationship is about.
Heaven 17-Tempation
The rising music and a great female vocal just blow you away. Amen.
INXS-Original Sin
The first song of theirs I heard, and it was played a lot during my year in Germany as an English Teaching Assistant, so it holds fond memories for me.
Joe Jackson-It’s Different For Girls
Vastly underrated lyricist, pianist, performer. I like the contrast of soft and hard, the gentle music and then the thrusting vocal.
The Kinks-You’ve Really Got Me
It was either The Kinks or The Jam, but the former gave the latter the way forward: English themes with great guitar work. This song is pure excitement.
Annie Lennox-Why?
One of the finest female singers. Always thoughtful lyrics, whether solo or elsewhere. As in this song.
Madness-The House Of Fun
One of the Nutty Boys’ finest. Always fun to listen to.
Harry Nilsson-Without You
A great voice, and probably his signature song. Sadly left us too early.
Roy Orbison-Crying
The original and the best. Others may have sung it, but the Big O caressed it.
Prince-Kiss
Not as graphic lyrics wise as some as his other stuff, but the song’s delivery is.
Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody
Classical meets pop. As we all know this song, I feel I don’t need to say owt.
Smokey Robinson-The Tears Of A Clown
My favourite song by my favourite singer. Each of his songs gives us a great tale of an aspect of love. As Bob Dylan described him, “America’s Greatest Living Poet.”
Soft Cell-Tainted Love
Showing how a cover version can really make a song. Memories of happy student days!
Talk Talk-Life’s What You Make It
The opening majestic, with a triumphal guitar entry. Grand without being empty.
U2-Pride (In The Name Of Love)
Hymn-like homage to some of life’s greatest human beings.
Luther Vandross-Stop To Love
Like Smokey, a truly great vocalist. Wish he was still with us.
The Waterboys-The Whole Of The Moon
For me the best live band around. This song rivals American Pie in its epic nature. Mike Scott is possibly Britain’s Greatest Living Poet!
XTC-Senses Working Overtime
A cheery song from a much underrated group. It was one of the ‘songs’ on our Rag minibus!
Paul Young-Wherever I Lay My Hat
A great vocalist who ‘came like a comet, blazing his trail’ and then disappeared into minor hits after a few years. Dare I say it, better than the original version.
ZZ Top-Give Me All Your Lovin’
Chugs along with great guitars. And great beards.
