UK approves £4bn US takeover of defence company Cobham www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-50874181?intlink_from_url=&link_location=live-reporting-story However, Lady Nadine Cobham - part of the family which set up the UK firm - called the decision "deeply disappointing" and criticised the timing of the decision, announced late on Friday night.
Lady Cobham said it was "cynically timed to avoid scrutiny on the weekend before Christmas".
She has previously warned the deal could jeopardise the UK's capacity for mid-air refuelling
She said: "In one of its first major economic decisions, the government is not taking back control so much as handing it away.
"In Cobham we stand to lose yet another great British defence manufacturer to foreign ownership, through a takeover that would never have been approved by the Americans, French or Japanese, all of whom have taken steps recently to raise protections for their own defence sectors."
Sir Alan Cobham founded Flight Refuelling Limited in 1934, which has grown to become a group of companies under the Cobham family name.
Lady Cobham is the widow of Sir Alan's son, Sir Michael Cobham.Looks like the fire sale has started. What are your thoughts on this, Yorks? To be honest? Cobham have just been flogged to US venture capitalists ffs! The Government have just rubber-stamped the sale of a business that is one of the leading companies in its field, not just in this country but worldwide to a bunch of f***ing US venture capitalists. I have recent direct experience of Cobham having managed to get my last contract employer onto their approved supplier list. It was a painful experience (for my last employer anyway) as they are a demanding customer because their standards are very high. Without wishing to go into tedious detail about the hoops that potential suppliers have to jump through to not just comply, but demonstrate compliance with such exacting standards, what Leadsom has just done is allow one of this country's leading manufacturing businesses to fall into the hands of another for whom short-term profit (frequently measured in months) rather than manufacturing excellence, is the primary concern. One might wonder why this Government has just agreed to the sale of a world-leading business selling a world-leading product designed and manufactured by skilled, well-paid people to a US owned business whose primary interest is profit. For what it is worth, I think that is indicative of the attitude we can expect to see from a Government that is desperate to replace what this country is about to lose because of the hard Brexit it has always preferred when we cut ties with the EU. Get used to it Brexiteers/those who voted Tory at the last election because what you voted for is the sale of one of the few world leading businesses we have left to the f***ing yanks in the hope that the b*st*rds give us something, anything, that will replace the trade we're about walk away from with the EU. For anyone who thinks, as Johnson appears to do, that it's time to forget our differences over Brexit and heal our relationships I've one thing to say. F*** right off!

Labour: anger, recrimination and bitterness mark fresh battle for party’s soul"The handling of the aftermath of defeat has made matters worse. Defeated candidates and MPs were not contacted by Corbyn or the party high command until late last week and even then all they received were identical impersonal letters, though some had short handwritten sentences written at the end by the leader. “It is like they said just print off 60 of those [the number of Labour MPs who lost their seats] and send them out would you?,” said one of the recipients. James Frith, who lost Bury North, was unimpressed by a note in Corbyn’s hand at the bottom of his circular letter. “So sorry at result and tks for all your work. Jeremy” was all the leader could muster." www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/dec/22/insults-infighting-battle-lines-drawn-future-labour-party

I think Labour are a spent force. If Scotland go their own way they will never get the seats back that they require.
We need a new left-centre party to be created from the ashes (no not you, Lord Farage). This could take 30 years to turn around.

Actually Downy by asking someone who has specialist knowledge of a certain subject. i.e. NYE and his high end civilian and military engineering experience it allows us all to develop a better appreciation for the nuance of a situation. If you choose not to listen to the thoughts of those who may add to your own understanding that’s fine for you but I read Gazz’s post before NYE replied and thought that’s an excellent idea.

So are you trying to tell me that you had no idea what NYE's reply was going to be?

Twas me deleting trying to pour oil on troubled waters.
I am now thumbing through all other mischievous posts and doing the same.
Don't really want to do it, but it beats entertaining the mother in law.
