I genuinely wish I was in Duds' shoes right now. As much as I have always wanted to live and teach over here, I can honestly say that the absolute train crash that is brexit was a big factor in my finally making the decisive move. Sitting here now in the sunshine on my balcony looking at the cathedral bells ringing I can safely say I made the right choice. ¡Buena suerte a todos!

We live in the 6th largest economy in the world ffs! Which makes the article not make sense. Are people using food banks instead of buying food? Just wondering.

Food banks are being used right around the corner from where I live, and they're not being used "instead of buying food", they're not a life choice, they're being forced on people who are unable to survive without them. If you had to make a choice of either putting food on the table or being able to switch the heating on in winter, then had a foodbank nearby to help you do both, what would you do? You don't live here and haven't done for over 16 years, so you have no first-hand knowledge of this issue at all. You p**s me off when you start this bullsh*t. Typical ex-pat ignorance, quit trolling.

There is considerable evidence to suggest that there are two significant reasons why people are being forced to use food banks. One is that they have been sanctioned by the DSS for minor indiscretions. These include failing to turn up for meetings due in some cases to Ill health including hospitalisation. The main DSS cause is the time it takes to process claims, frequently in excess of 6 weeks. These were changes made to the process of claiming benefits that were deliberately imposed in a bid to make claiming them even harder and more demeaning than the process already is. The second cause of food bank use is in work poverty. That is people who work, frequently full time but who find that much of their income is swallowed by the cost of renting due in part to a chronic shortage of affordable/social housing. Just in case anybody should run away with the idea that people can go to a food bank rather than Sainsbury's, they can't. You have to be referred by social services, a doctor, etc. Just to reinforce the idea that life in this country is tough for some there were over 56000 emergency admissions of children to hospital in the year to March 2019 with pneumonia. Pneumonia is predominantly found in the underprivileged and is entirely preventable.

It's how the smug self-satisfied a hole gets off to sleep at night. Not me guv, it's them. Nothing to do with central Govt grants to local authorities being cut by 50% since 2010 of course. Nothing to do with Councils almost exhausting their reserves just to provide basic minimum services. You don't have to be a liar to be a Tory minister, nor do you have to be an utterly repellent slimeball but I think it helps.
