Week Z

Well, here it is. Our final week.
CHUMS has given us some fantastic discussions about music; valuable insights into the respective tastes of Heaveners; a chance to reminisce and recommend; a welcome distraction during what has been, in parts, another disappointing season; and above all else it's given me something to write about in the programme.
But, like all good things, it must come to a close - and it does so, somewhat predictably, with Week Z.
Cast your eyes over the following and then, as you've been doing for the past 25 weeks, vote for someone else:
Zappa, Frank Zero 7 Zevon, Warren Zutons, The ZZ Top
And remember, this is not the end. We still have 26 songs to decide on (don't worry, we won't do one a week as that really would be milking it!). I'll be announcing how to vote for your favourite song from our 26 artists next week, once we have an artist for Z.
Right, off for a well-deserved lie down now. Zzzzzz

Has to be The Zombies for me. She's Not There and Time Of The Season are top tracks with Colin Blunstone's soaring voice and big contributions from Rod Argent and Chris White.

Yeh, The Zombies definitely deserve a shout-out - if only for having produced, in Odessey and Oracle (on which Time of the Season appears), probably the best album of the '60s British psychedelic boom. But, for me, this week's vote has to go to Zion Train, whose innovative approach to dub reggae - mixing it with acid house in an electronic styl-ee - redefined the genre during the early '90s. The most ground-breaking originals of theirs to check out would be Follow Like Wolves (going for the Fudgie vote there...!) and Dance of Life. And, when it comes to essential cover versions (of which there are truly very few), the take that they have on The Ruts' Babylon's Burning gives an already-classic song a completely new spirit. Although the actual tunes for our CD remain to be chosen, i should like to thank Sandy at this stage for what have been 26 thoroughly enjoyable weeks of debate around our fave bands and singers. Fantastic fun and good-natured argument. And we have all learned a bit more about music... as well as, dare I say, about each other !

Not much from me this week - just one band that might actually make you go zzzzzzzzz
Zero 7. A downbeat band for whom the word ‘mellifluous’ was probably invented. Their first album, Simple Things is a gorgeous album, taking a leaf out of Air’s, Morcheeba’s and Portishead’s music book. If I smoked pot (which I don't and never have, officer) then this is what I'd put on. Alternatively, get a single malt, a cosy sofa and a bit of Zero 7 in your life! (They tried to go too poppy with their second album: When it Falls. There are some good songs, but generally I think it lacks personality.)

The Zombies for me also, with an honourable mention for Warren Zevon, 'Werewolves of London' is a fantastic tune, in spite of Kid Rock's best efforts to flush it down the Sanilav with a huge slice of Dundee cake!

ZZ Top.
And a terrible confession.
When I was doing my PGCE, training to be a foreign language teacher, our tutor was involved in a car accident. Thankfully he was ok although he had to use crutches for a couple of weeks or so. Now this all happened about the time that ZZ Top's song Legs was in the charts. Legs in German is Beine, which also is similar in sound to the German word for although, beinah. So we made up a song to the tune of Legs with the opening:
Er hatte (= He had) Beine Beinah hatte er Beine First there was a crash Then there was a smash
In addition we used to play the guitar riff secretly (air style) when he was around.
Seemed funny at the time.

Oops. Inadvertently mistyped... Beinah means 'almost', not 'although'.

While I'm on, a quick word about the voting for songs to go on the album.
As we've been going along, I've come up with three 'suggestions' for each artist, which I had intended to announce next week as a list for everyone to consider (but with, of course, the option to vote for something else as you have been doing).
However, on the basis I fear I may well come in for criticism of some of my suggestions, and since for some acts I'm relatively in the dark on what would be considered their greatest songs, I've decided to change the way it will work.
Next week, we'll have an open vote (in private via PM) for what song you think should feature for each artist.
The week after, I will announce the top songs as voted for by everyone (for each artist), and in that second week of voting you must choose one of the songs listed.
The week after that, I'll reveal our CD.
Hope that works for everyone.

No further action since the last update, but I've got too much on today to make a decision, so I'll leave Week Z open until Monday, for anyone who hasn't yet voted, or has voted for someone other than Zero 7, Zion Train or The Zutons, to get involved and save me a job!

Right then, time is up. And our final act to make it on to the album is....
... ZZ Top!
Entry to follow, and then we can start voting for songs.
