An almost impossible task to come up with a shortlist this week, and I was sorely tempted not to provide one and just open it up to suggestions (for fear of upsetting some - if not all - of you!) but in the end I'll start us off with a mixed bag of 5:
Simon, Paul Sinatra, Frank Smiths, The Stereophonics Stone Roses, The
I suspect we could have a long list of nominees at the end of next week - most with one vote each, but that's what'll make it so interesting! Unless, of course, my casting vote is required!
I'll call time on this next Friday (16th).
Good luck everyone - big breaths ("yeth, and I'm only sixtheen....")

The Specials. They and their keyboard player Jerry Dammers provided the soundtrack to my youth, with their own songs and all who graced Dammers' legendary Two-Tone label.
Music needed a real kick up the arse in the late 70s, and they provided it, and then some.

I would vote for Stockport County fans but since that probably won't count I'm gonna say Stone Roses for me!
Shakira gets a special mention for being stunning!

S was always going to be the difficult one. From my own collection I have to reluctantly discard Al Stewart Santana Frank Sinatra Nancy Sinatra Dusty Springfield Barbra Streisand Sting Spandau Ballet Simon & Garfunkel Paul Simon
Close but no cigar for Bob Seger (Hollywood Nights just a classic) Stephen Stills (Manassas a fine album) Steely Dan (pure class)
Which just leaves....birthday sharer, supreme live artist and simply.. the Boss... Bruce Springsteen

A seriously splendid shortlist of sounds this week. You will have heard of some of these bands, others perhaps not - so think of it as more public service broadcast to anyone into indie rock. I've discovered and rediscovered new bands through CHUMS, so this is my gift to you! (And also my excuse as to why it is such a long post and not just three words)
Salad - good sound, pretty poor lyricists – 'Why don't you live in a house in Kent / Spend all your money in Brent…' Singer Marijne van der Vlugt was very schwing
Sleeper – one of Mrs E’s favourites from the 90s. Louise Werner was also very schwing.
Shed Seven - started out in sunny York whilst I was at Uni there – saw them loads. Even bought Rick Witter a pint after a gig once
Scott and Charlene’s Wedding – sound a bit like a slightly overcharged Pavement
Suburban Kids with Biblical Names – Swedish duo making toe-tapping, fun indie pop songs – check out 'Rent a Wreck': ‘I wanna turn all the dance floors into a burning inferno of Ba Ba…’
Skunk Anansie – never really grew in popularity after Paranoid and Sunburnt, which is a shame
The Sundays – their three albums Reading Writing and Arithmetic, Blind and Static and Silence are still played regularly chez Epworth. They’ve aged well. Harriet Wheeler was very schwing
Scissors for Lefty – Indie rock band from San Fran
The Shins – Indie rock band from Albuquerque. Remind me a bit of Beck (which I think I omitted from my shortlist for Week B – tsk)
Shrubbies – made one album Memphis in Texas which is hard to get hold of. Lovely sound – especially the lead singer, Sharron Saddington
The Scaramanga Six – an acquired taste, which sometimes I have and sometimes I don’t. About has heavy rock as I go! Leeds based band who produce all their own stuff
Spratley Japs – hard to describe – punky, psychedelic-y, pop-y, rocky. Either way, a good listen
Simple Kid – heard in a shop in Barcelona and managed to find an employee who spoke good enough English to understand my request for the artist. His albums are called 1 and 2 (known as: SK1 and SK2. Hopefully he will release a third album!)
Spiritualised – ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space…
The Stairs – bonkers
Sugarcubes - lead singer: unmistakably Bjork
Sidi Bou Said – seriously under-rated band. Sound like The Pixies (although they are three women and one bloke). Well worth checking out
And I still must have missed off loads of bands!
After all that, there can only be one winner for me: The Stone Roses. So, not so alternative after all! They, more than any other band, defined my youf - baggy jeans, long floppy hair (even more than Shrops!), T-shirts with lemons on, etc. A friend even changed her name by deed poll to Sally Cinnamon. I’m probably also in the minority of enjoying listening to the Second Coming as much as their eponymous first album. Big regret is never seeing them live. Really enjoyed Shane Meadows’ documentary ‘Made of Stone’.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I love this thread, Sandy!

Glad you're enjoying it mate.
Best do an update so I can keep on track of these:
Springsteen, Bruce 2 Stone Roses, The 2 Scaggs, Boz 1 Sigur Ros 1 Simon, Paul 1 Smiths, The 1 Specials, The 1
No surprise that we're pretty widely, and evenly, spread so far. Keep 'em coming.

There are some good ones, Stereophonics Supertramp Swing out Sister Spandau Ballet
But I am going for Swing Out Sister for their fusion of Pop, Jazz, big band and Soul. Plus Corrinne Drewery has one hell of a voice.
