i think we've mentioned recently on here that paul heaton lives/lived in bramhall...and as i've probably mentioned a million times, 'unknown pleasures' was recorded at strawberry. doesn't jah wobble live in stocky (possibly bramhall again)? hence him doing very good co-commentaries on pure a couple of times.
weird though isn't it? you really associate paul heaton with hull or maybe sheffield, and terry hall will always be a coventry man...is it relationships or what that brought them to stocky?

Terry Hall may have been recording at Strawberry Studios when with the CF, so he may have just been staying locally while he was working in the studio. I know The Housemartins recorded some of their stuff at Yellow 2 in Stockport, so maybe Paul H familiarised himself with the area around that time?

Found this on Terry on the Man United Supporters Trust site: Terry was the former singer with the legendary ska band, The Specials, who enjoyed both critical acclaim and chart success in the late 70's and early 80's. After the band disbanded he went on to front other groups such as the Fun Boy Three and the Colourfield before going alone in the early 90's. Terry fell in love with United through George Best and moved up to the Stockport area in the early 80's so he could watch the reds regular. Nowadays he resides in London but gets to as many home and aways as possible. Terry is proud to be a patron of MUST joinmust.org/about/patrons/terry-hall.php

Although ABC are always remembered as a 'Sheffield band', lead singer, Martin Fry, was born in Stockport...

I have always been keen to hear Glen Campbell's classic take on Wichita Lineman - with its opener about being "a lineman for the County" - playing as the teams emerge. But, then, we wouldn't want any assistant referees getting the wrong idea...

let us know how it gets on - i've got that 33 1/3 book on the making of 'doolittle' (which like most of the books in that series was less interesting than i hoped), but i'll have a pop at it if you rate it. About half way through Fool the World, an oral history or a band called Pixies. It really is excellent. As the title suggests, it is a series of interviews with band members and others and the book is a collection of their verbatim comments - unlike any other biog I've read. It is extremely well put together in chronological order with different people giving their take on the same events. You hear from John Murphy, Kristen Hersh, managers, producers, sound engineers, etc. There are real gems in there like: How they formed in Boston How they ended up on a UK label Where the in-between-songs banter on Surfer Rosa came from Who is in the photo for the Surfer Rosa front cover and how they created the scene What Gigantic is actually about Why a song about a brain damaged girl on a bike is called 'Ed is Dead' Why songs are sung in Spanish You also get a real sense of the different personalities in the band and how they worked together on stage. The one thing that is a consistent theme so far is how normal and non-rock and roll they all were. They didn't dress up in a particular way, they just turned up and played. In fact in the early days, Kim was still working in an office. She would often play gigs in clubs in her work suit and blouse! I've just got the end of Surfer Rosa and the European Tour with The Throwing Muses. The Pixies were supporting the Muses at the start in the UK, but when they went to Europe they co-headlined, with the Muses going on first. It's really easy to read and the contributions from John Murphy are particularly good. Doolittle next... 9/10

Cheers for the review, Eppers.
On the basis of that, it sounds like a must-buy for me... off to Amazon I go!

Yeah, I'm normally hesitant about recommending things too much in case you disagree and I've wasted your money, but on this occassion I've made an exception. The style and content (including the gems mentioned and more) are fantastic.

Excellent - I look forward to yours and Macc's view on the book. In order... 9/10 - the book is almost a victim of its own success! The way I read these days is catching 3-4 pages a night, rather than sitting an reading a book in a few days. Don't get me wrong, I could probably read this book in one sitting. However, the authors have interviewed so many people (which is great) that I struggle to keep up with who is who. There is a list of names with mini biogs at the start and I'm always having to go back to the that when reading and thinking: was that the owner of the club in Boston or the European Tour Manager? It's the way I'm reading it, so perhaps losing a point for it is a bit harsh! On reflection 10/10 for the book and 1/10 for my approach to reading it! Gigantic is not about Mr John Murphy - and it's Mr John Murphy who tells you that! A most excellent save on the Word Association Thread. I saw it and thought I may need to come to the rescue, but I hadn't thought of your rather ingeniuous link. And whilst I'm here, nothing for CHUMS Week S? One of the highlights of my CH week is reading yours and Maccs posts! (I'm now going to write out 100 times, Bart Simpson style, 'I am not a Macc-ars groupie') Oh, and don't call me Shirley.
