THIS INTERVIEW TOOK PLACE ON 17TH APRIL, 2012
Was it an easy decision to come back and join Stockport County or was it a difficult decision considering what happened over Summer?
It was easy to return to County because of the bond that I share with the club, the only hard decision I had to make was if it was right for me to return or not considering the circumstance of the clubs position when I did return, and how or if I could cope with another relegation after feeling so guilty for the relegation last season.
In the past, people from all around football have commented on how vocal our fans our even in the face of adversity, you seem to have a better rapport with the fans than most, what are your thoughts on the blue and white army?
From the day I walked in the club I have received the best support of my career, and second to only my family. The supporters at county have had to suffer through a lot of disappointment and for them to still be able to completely support the team 100% is phenomenal.
Although it was a bit of an anti-climax, conceding at the end, we are safe, which is a minor miracle given where we were in January, how would you describe the feeling of helping to keep the club up after such a tough season?
It feels like an achievement and one that i can be proud of, but at the same time its dampened by the fact that this club should not be in the situation where we have fighting to stay in the conference premier, especially this close to the end of the season.
Jim Gannon is obviously a legend at Edgeley Park; does he get across his passion and commitment for the club to the players, who maybe don't have Stockport County in their heart so much?
Absolutely! There is no player that has worked under Jim Gannon that can say he isn’t 100% committed and passionate about his job, even more so at county because of the bond he shares with the club. The hours the gaffer puts in to supply us with the information we need to play against other teams is unbelievable and we as players do appreciate having a manager that is that devoted to the team and that focused on producing results.
Are there any major differences or similarities between Gannon and any of the managers you had last season?
Pete Ward and Alan Lord had a similar attitude towards the players and the club. They like us to do things to the best of our ability, and will accept if you mess up as long as you tried to do the right thing and gave it everything when doing it.
Was it strange stepping out onto the pitch against Wrexham again after so many months and with at least half of a team different from your first spell with us?
It was and it wasn’t. It felt so natural and i didn’t even have any nerves but it was difficult as i hadn’t even learnt all the names of the other players yet and went through game calling my centre half partner Carl P “mate”.
The two goals you have scored this season have both been very well taken and ones a striker would be proud of, do you enjoy playing in an attacking role and is it something you train for or is it just something that you do instinctively?
I originally started my career as an attacking player so there are some natural instincts when going forward, but apart from that it is more to the fact that you pick up on what coaches and managers ask strikers to do in training session when you are defending them so I try to imagine the type of player that i would hate to mark and base my attacking game on that.
Last season you impressed the fans by being voted Young Player of The season in your first ever year of professional football, but were inexplicably released, do you hope to be playing for the club next season or was this only ever a deal until the end of the season?
Absolutely! I would be happy to play for Stockport County for the rest of my career. When I received the phone call from the gaffer asking me to come back there was no decision to make, that’s why I was on the train up to Stockport 40 minutes after the phone call. Last season when I was told that the club were not in a position to offer me a new contract I think that hurt more than the relegation because I felt like i had given my all to the club and they had just turned their back on me, but that was naive thinking as it really did just come down to the financial state of the club at the time.
Outside of County for a bit now, did you ever play any other sports when you were younger, that you had hopes for, before deciding on football as a career?
Yes I was a keen athlete when in school and I went on to represent Hampshire at the all England school’s athletic championships. I was also pretty good at boxing but football always overpowered any other sporting interests!
When you were playing semi-pro and training with the Nike Academy, what did you do as a job and if you didn't become a professional, would you still be doing it now?
I was studying at the University of Bath so didn’t really have any time for a job as my studies and football took up all of my time. However every year when the season ends I go home to my parents and go and work with my old man for the summer painting and decorating. At one point I was going to do an apprenticeship with him but luckily I held it off and a couple weeks later I was back playing full time football. I was actually painting as I got the first ever phone call from Alan Lord.
Do you look at players like Chris Smalling and Michael Kightly in the Premiership for inspiration and as a sign of what non-league footballers can achieve with the right application of their talents?
I do and I don’t. What people have to realise about these players is that they have been extremely lucky! There are hundreds of non league players that if just given the time, resources and the belief that they can go on and play higher they could. I know of players that have given up playing football because they become so frustrated with their careers and I know players in the premiership, championship and leagues that don’t appreciate the position they are in.
Do you ever look on any of the County forums, reads fans notes in the programmes or any of the County fanzines, or do you generally just avoid them, also have you ever visited County Heaven?
I have only ever looked at the county fans forum once, and will never again! I am the first player to hold my hands up and apologise if I have played badly but I made the mistake in thinking I would be logging on to see comments of support and instead I was scarred for life seeing people’s true opinion of me. Comments that I won’t ever be able to forget! Everyone is entitled to express their opinion in my eyes but I wouldn’t advise any player to look at forums because there will always be criticism.
Back to County, what lads do you get on best with and who has the best and worse 'banter'?
I like to think that I get on with all of the players but there are a couple players closer to me than others because of my time here last year. Andy Halls, Danny Rowe and Carl Pieregani are the lad’s I’m closest to this year. The best banter on the team is probably from Euan Holden, he has a unique type of banter because of where he is from and he is able to get a few bites from various people because of the stories and connections he has through his brother! The worst banter is usually from the lads that come in on loan but a big contender for the worst is Danny Hattersly or Aaron Cole.
When you were growing up, which football team did you support?
I never really supported a team I followed a certain individual who I idolised and still do. That player is Thierry Henry, and when he went to Arsenal i guess I started to follow them. So now I would say Isupport Arsenal but also have strong ties with Liverpool.
Finally, what is your favourite County song and do you know all of the words to it?!
“The scarf My Father wore” is my favourite simply because of the atmosphere on the pitch when you have five thousand people belting it out at you! It really is a powerful song, and have heard from various players that its extremely intimidating when they visit Edgeley Park! I don’t know all the words just yet but I’m not far off and will know them by the end of the season! Also the chants and shout from big Fitzy e.g. “BRAZIL, BRAZIL” “COME ON COUNTY”!
I'd like to thank Jordan very much for agreeing to this interview and I hope that he will decide to come and visit us at County Heaven and see that we're not all as bad as certain 'other' messageboards!
